The most common mistake in horse barn design is inadequate ventilation — or ventilation that creates drafts at horse height. Horses need significant fresh air exchange to stay healthy, but they're sensitive to direct cold drafts on their bodies. Proper barn ventilation uses ridge vents, eave openings, and strategic window placement to create natural air movement without drafts at stall level. We design ventilation into every horse barn from the beginning.

Ceiling Height
Minimum 10 feet in stall areas, 12–14 feet in aisles for horses that rear or for use of equipment. Arena ceiling heights depend on your discipline — a flat work arena needs less height than a jumping facility. We confirm ceiling heights for your specific use before the building is designed.

Stall Sizing & Configuration
Standard horse stalls are 12x12 feet for most breeds. Warmbloods and drafts typically need 14x14. Foaling stalls should be 16x16 minimum. Aisle width matters too — 12 feet minimum for two horses to pass safely. We design stall configurations around your horses' size and your management routines.

Fire Safety
Horse barns present significant fire risk — hay, bedding, electrical, and confined animals are a dangerous combination. We build with fire-resistant materials where possible, proper electrical installation rated for agricultural environments, strategic door placement for emergency egress, and separation between hay storage and stall areas.

Footing Preparation
For indoor arenas, footing preparation is as important as the structure above it. Proper base preparation — compacted gravel base, drainage layer, and appropriate footing surface — determines whether your arena is safe and consistent year-round or becomes a maintenance problem. We prepare arena bases properly because it's significantly cheaper to do it right once than to fix it later.

Step 3 — Permits & Approvals P: Building permit applications managed through the relevant Wellington County municipality. We flag any zoning or setback considerations that apply to your property before construction begins.

Step 4 — Site Preparation P: Site grading, drainage preparation and concrete work completed before construction. For arena projects, proper base preparation is completed as part of this phase — not rushed to get walls up faster.
